The rule

The CPR rules for teachers and coaches

Education Code 44259 asks candidates for a preliminary Multiple Subject, Single Subject or Education Specialist credential to complete CPR training that covers infants, children and adults and meets American Heart Association or American Red Cross standards. New teachers, interns and staff moving into a credential program are the usual group.

For coaches, the California Interscholastic Federation lists First Aid and CPR Certification among the primary requirements to coach high school sports, next to a coaching course, concussion, sudden cardiac arrest and heat illness training, and tells coaches to check the district for the exact requirement. CIF Bylaw 22.B.(9) counts paid and volunteer coaches alike, and Education Code 49032 requires every high school sports coach to complete a coaching education program.

FAQ

School Staff CPR: common questions

Do California teachers need CPR for their credential?

Yes, for preliminary Multiple Subject, Single Subject and Education Specialist credentials. Education Code 44259 asks for CPR training that covers infants, children and adults and meets American Heart Association or American Red Cross standards. Heartsaver CPR AED with the child and infant modules is the usual course; the credential program has the final word.

Do high school coaches need CPR certification?

The California Interscholastic Federation lists First Aid and CPR Certification among the primary requirements to coach high school sports, and asks coaches to confirm the exact requirement with their school district. It applies to paid and volunteer coaches. Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED covers both first aid and CPR.

Which CPR course covers adult, child and infant?

AHA Heartsaver CPR AED with the child and infant modules covers all three ages, and so does Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED with those modules. For clinical staff such as school nurses, AHA BLS Provider covers adult, child and infant CPR at the healthcare level.

Can a school train staff on a professional development day?

Yes. A staff day is the easiest time to certify a whole site at once. We set up in a classroom, library or multipurpose room with every manikin and AED trainer, and run as many groups as your headcount needs, each of 5 or more.

Do teachers get their card the same day?

Yes. Every teacher, aide and coach who passes gets the AHA Heartsaver eCard the same day, valid for 2 years, ready for the credential file or the athletic office. Training together also means the whole staff renews in the same month two years later.

Is there a travel fee, and what do we provide?

There is no travel fee anywhere in Southern California. The instructor brings the manikins, AED trainers, supplies and eCards, and we can come any day and at any time, weekends and evenings too. Your team provides the room.
