The rule

What the Dental Board of California asks for

The Dental Board of California lists Basic Life Support as a mandatory course for license renewal, for dentists and for dental auxiliaries (California Code of Regulations, title 16, section 1016). The course can come from the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross, or be a BLS course approved by ASHI, an ADA CERP provider or an AGD PACE provider.

Online courses are not accepted for the BLS requirement. The Board asks for a live, in-person skills practice session, a skills test and a written exam, and it awards at most 4 credits for the course. That is why an office cannot send its team to a video course and call it done.

In practice

What it means for your team

Who in the office needs BLS

Dentists, registered dental assistants and registered dental hygienists renew their licenses on BLS, so they take the full AHA BLS Provider course: adult, child and infant CPR, the AED and bag-mask breaths.

Front desk and treatment coordinators are not covered by the dental renewal rule. Many offices still put them through BLS with the clinical team, so everyone in the building can start compressions. Others choose Heartsaver CPR AED for them, at the same per-student tiers.

Fitting it around patients

Most BLS students finish in under 2 hours, so offices often use a lunch block or the hour before the first patient. We set up in the break room or an empty operatory with every manikin and AED trainer.

Training the whole office together also lines up the renewal dates: every card is valid for 2 years from the same day, so nobody lapses between license cycles.

FAQ

Dental Office BLS: common questions

Do dental offices in California need BLS for license renewal?

Yes. The Dental Board of California lists Basic Life Support as a mandatory renewal course for dentists and dental auxiliaries. It accepts American Heart Association or American Red Cross BLS, or a BLS course approved by ASHI, CERP or PACE. The AHA BLS Provider course we teach onsite issues that card.

Is online-only BLS accepted by the Dental Board of California?

No. The Dental Board says online courses are not accepted for the BLS requirement. It asks for a live, in-person skills practice session, a skills test and a written exam. Our onsite BLS class covers all three at your office, and the Board awards up to 4 credits for it.

Can front desk staff take Heartsaver instead of BLS?

Yes, if they are not renewing a dental license. Heartsaver CPR AED teaches CPR and the AED for non-clinical staff at the same per-student group tiers. Many offices still train the front desk in BLS with the clinical team so the whole office learns the same steps.

How long does onsite BLS take for a dental team?

Most BLS students finish in under 2 hours, including the skills test and written exam. That is why many dental offices book onsite BLS over a lunch block or before the first patient, so the schedule loses as little chair time as possible.

Do dental staff get their BLS card the same day?

Yes. Everyone who passes gets an AHA BLS Provider eCard the same day, valid for 2 years. Keep the eCard with your license renewal records, and the whole office renews on the same date two years later.

How much does onsite BLS cost per person?

Onsite AHA BLS Provider is priced per student by group size: 5: $80; 6 to 10: $78; 11 to 15: $73; 16 to 29: $68; 30 or more: $60. The minimum onsite group is 5. A small office can join with a neighboring practice to reach 5, or send staff to a public class at our Rancho Cucamonga classroom.

Is there a travel fee, and what do we provide?

There is no travel fee anywhere in Southern California. The instructor brings the manikins, AED trainers, supplies and eCards, and we can come any day and at any time, weekends and evenings too. Your team provides the room.
