The rule

What California asks of health studios

Health and Safety Code 104113 says every health studio must acquire and maintain an automated external defibrillator and train personnel in its use. A health studio is a facility that lets members use its equipment for exercise, fitness training or similar purposes on a membership basis. Hotels that offer a fitness room to registered guests are not included.

The training count is tied to the number of AEDs: for each AED, up to five units, at least one employee completes CPR and AED training, and after the first five units, one more trained employee for every additional five. The AED itself is checked after each use and at least once every 30 days when it has not been used.

In practice

What it means for your team

24-hour and unstaffed gyms

A studio that lets members in when no employee is on the premises has extra duties under section 104113. All employees who work on the premises must complete CPR and AED training within 30 days of beginning employment, and a trained employee must be on the premises for at least 50 hours a week.

Members must be told when they sign up that a trained employee will not always be there, and a studio larger than 6,000 square feet must deny access when no employee is present. A regular onsite class is the simplest way to keep new hires inside the 30-day window.

Trainers, instructors and the front desk

The person nearest a member who collapses is usually a trainer on the floor, a class instructor or whoever is at the front desk. Heartsaver CPR AED teaches all of them compressions, the AED and choking relief in one short session, on your own floor and with your own AED cabinet in mind.

If a trainer certification asks for a current CPR and AED card, check whether it must include a hands-on skills test. Every onsite class we teach ends with one, so the card holds up either way.

FAQ

Gym Staff CPR and AED: common questions

Do gyms in California need an AED?

Yes. California Health and Safety Code 104113 says every health studio must acquire and maintain an automated external defibrillator and train personnel to use it. A health studio is a membership facility for exercise or fitness training; hotels with a guest fitness room are excluded. The AED is checked after each use and at least every 30 days.

Do gym employees need CPR training?

Under section 104113, at least one employee per AED, up to five units, completes CPR and AED training, plus one more for every additional five units. Studios open when no employee is present must train every employee who works on the premises within 30 days of hire. Heartsaver CPR AED covers it.

What do 24-hour unstaffed gyms have to do?

Section 104113 asks a studio that admits members with no employee present to train all employees in CPR and AED within 30 days of hire, keep a trained employee on site at least 50 hours a week, tell members at sign-up, and deny unstaffed access if the space is over 6,000 square feet.

Which course fits personal trainers?

AHA Heartsaver CPR AED, the course for people without a clinical license. It covers adult CPR, the AED and choking relief, with child and infant options. Trainers who hold a clinical license, such as physical therapists, can take BLS Provider at the same group price tiers.

How much does onsite CPR cost per person?

Onsite AHA Heartsaver CPR AED is priced per student by group size: 5: $80; 6 to 10: $78; 11 to 15: $73; 16 to 29: $68; 30 or more: $60. The minimum onsite group is 5. A small studio can pair with a neighboring studio to reach 5, or send new hires to a public class at our Rancho Cucamonga classroom.

Is there a travel fee, and what do we provide?

There is no travel fee anywhere in Southern California. The instructor brings the manikins, AED trainers, supplies and eCards, and we can come any day and at any time, weekends and evenings too. Your team provides the room.
